Why should you hire a DJ for your wedding?
The short, quick answer is because you’ll have a lot less stress and have peace of mind on one of the most important days of your lives.
You can save money by renting equipment and having your brother figure it out how to set it up and work it. You can find an uncle to MC and run the sequence of events.
However, when you go with this route, you take on some risks. Modern-day equipment is pretty reliable, but there’s always a chance of failure. When you hire a DJ, they will have back-up equipment, ready to go in case there’s a malfunction.
Setting up a laptop and a speaker system is easy. Setting up wireless microphones takes more knowledge and effort because of many reasons, including equalization of the sound, antenna placement, and making sure you’re using the best frequencies to prevent drop-outs.
Your brother will need to pick up all the equipment, fit it in his car, carry it to the venue, set it up properly, and break it down. Your uncle will need to be sure the mic works so he can MC, run the timeline, making sure the bride and groom stay on schedule, all while trying to enjoy himself as a guest. These are things I wouldn’t want to burden a family member or close friend with on my big day where I want everyone to have fun.
An experienced DJ will not only be able to offer his or her expertise on your wedding day, but they’ll be able to mix music on the spot for the dancing at the end of the night. Put simply, mixing music consists of matching the tempo (speed) of songs, in a specific order, so that the music continues to play. The flow of energy, which can be brought up and down, is never broken, which is more enjoyable when you’re dancing.
Without a DJ, songs would be played and stopped before going onto the next one. I once saw a DJ use Youtube and it had 15-30 second ads playing at the beginning of each song!
Pros of hiring a DJ:
Back-up equipment in the event of anything failing
Extensive knowledge of equipment
MC ability and experience
Assistance with creating the timeline and running it smoothly
The ability to mix music during the dancing portion (vs. songs playing and stopping like on the radio). This keeps the flow of energy going
Cons of not hiring a DJ:
Risk of audio equipment failing
Risk of falling behind on the timeline
Can be more money than you want to spend
No flow of music for dancing
